Step Up Counter: Hands-Free Step Up Rep Counting

Reps · Quads, Glutes · A knee-height step or box

Animated demo of the Step Up as the FitnessBruh app shows it

Driving up onto a box asks one leg to do the work, and this step up counter follows the knee of the leg on the box. It counts each rep out loud while you stay side-on to the phone.

One leg at a time is the rule here. Pick the leg that goes on the box, and the coach calls the switch with a short count-in when it's time to turn around.

Phone setup

Prop the phone upright at chest height, a few steps back. You stand side-on to it, with a knee-height step or box in front of you.

The leg you pick is nearest the phone, and its foot stays on the box for the whole set. Keep your whole body in the frame.

How FitnessBruh counts it

The measurement is the angle at the knee of the leg on the box, from hip to knee to ankle. Your foot on the box with the knee bent is the start, standing tall on the box is the far position, and lowering the other foot back to the floor, with the box knee bending again, completes the rep.

The counter follows the leg you picked. The coach calls the switch with a short count-in, you turn around so the other leg is nearest the phone, and the set ends after both legs.

Counting starts once the camera has a steady view of your shoulders and hips, so plant your lead foot on the box during the five-second countdown.

FAQ

How high should the step be?

Knee height. On a low step your knee may not bend enough to count, so choose a box that makes it work.

Why keep my lead foot on the box between reps?

Stepping all the way off between reps can add an extra count. Leave that foot planted for the whole set.

What happens at the switch?

The coach calls it with a count-in. Turn around so the other leg is nearest the phone, and put that foot on the box.
